Organizational Overview
The Association of Equipment Manufacturers (AEM) is the North American-based international trade group for more than 800 member companies, providing business development resources for manufacturers of equipment, products and services used worldwide in the construction, agriculture, forestry, mining and utility fields.
AEM has a long history of service – being more than 100 years old. The association is headquartered in Milwaukee, Wisconsin (USA) and has offices in the national capitals of Washington, DC (USA); Beijing, China; Ottawa, Canada; and Brussels, Belgium.
A key AEM activity is trade shows. The association owns or co-owns and produces several international trade expositions which are the industry leaders for their market segments, providing a cost-effective way for buyers and sellers to connect and conduct business.
AEM expositions showcase the latest equipment technologies, products and services. They offer industry professionals such as contractors, distributors, materials producers, rental companies and government officials a convenient one-stop location for face-to-face meetings with leading industry suppliers to discuss new ideas and business solutions. AEM shows also provide access to expert education and training sessions and networking opportunities with industry peers from around the world. AEM shows are run for and by the industry with the expositions structured to best fit the business needs of exhibitors and attendees, and with show revenues used to support industry programs and services.
Scope of Membership Activity
AEM member companies manufacture a wide variety of equipment, from large earthmovers and agricultural equipment to small hand-held, portable and walk-behind machinery - designed to handle a myriad of specialized tasks. Members also manufacture a variety of components used by other Original Equipment Manufacturers (OEMs) - everything from transmissions and hydraulic pumps to electronic controls, gauges and lubricants. Other members provide industry-related services such as equipment financing, trade magazines, equipment auctions and consulting.
Scope of Services
AEM services are global in scope, designed to foster business in emerging as well as developed markets. The association focuses on several core areas, including technical and safety services, statistics and market information, global public policy issues, trade shows, education and training, and international support services.
Standards-related Information
AEM is not an SDO, however, we spend considerable resources globally sharing best practices, new work item projects and encouraging participation in standards work. Most specifically we have organized training workshops in China, India, Chile, Brazil, Argentina and Russia to explain the ISO standards process and encourage active participation in creating and adopting market-relevant ISO standards. AEM also shares information with its members on emerging standards and regulatory efforts we learn of globally. AEM members use company-specific, national, regional and international standards.
Currently AEM has little formal activity in the conformity assessment arena.
Technical Regulations-related Information
AEM industries are most actively involved with the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) and the Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA). AEM currently has Alliances with both organizations. The key CFR references that impact AEM members include CFR 29 1910, 1926 & 1928.

AEM's Beijing, China office is well positioned to help companies in the globalization process — the process of gaining market share in an export market, from initial market entry to an established presence. In all steps of the process, the Association's China office is there to help companies succeed: from initial market research to direct sales through agents, to established, localized distribution, followed by assembly and local sourcing in the market, and finally, if the market warrants it, local machining, assembly, engineering and management.

AEM’s Brussels resource provides companies with a point of contact within Europe and is intended to primarily offer communication services on European standards, regulations and safety work. A regular newsletter is the primary vehicle for providing this communication.
