Organizational Overview
AWC is committed to ensuring a resilient, safe, and sustainable built environment. To achieve these objectives, AWC contributes to the development of sound public policies, codes, and regulations which allow for the appropriate and responsible
manufacture and use of wood products. We support the utilization of wood products by developing and disseminating consensus standards, comprehensive technical guidelines, and tools for wood design and construction, as well as providing
education regarding their application.AF&PA is the national trade association of the forest, wood products, and paper industries. AF&PA represents companies and related associations that engage in or represent the manufacture of pulp, paper, paperboard and wood products used throughout the world.
The Wood Products Sector of AF & PA oversees all industry issues related to the manufacturing, distribution, use, and reuse of traditional and engineered wood products.
Scope of Membership Activity
AF&PAAWC represents member industries on public policy matters, including advocacy before federal, state and local legislatures, regulatory and administrative agencies, other governmental and quasi-governmental organizations, and in relevant international fora.

Specific industry Information
The American Wood Council (AWC) is the voice of North American wood products manufacturing, representing over 75 percent of an industry that provides approximately 400,000 men and women in the United States with family-wage jobs. AWC members make products that are essential to everyday life from a renewable resource that absorbs and sequesters carbon. Staff experts develop state-of-the-art engineering data, technology, and standards for wood products to assure their safe and efficient design, as well as provide information on wood design, green building, and environmental regulations.The forest products industry accounts for approximately 6 percent of total U.S. manufacturing output, employs more than a million people, and ranks among the top 10 manufacturing employers in 42 U.S. states with an estimated payroll exceeding $50 billion.
The United States is one of the world’s most diverse exporters of sustainable forest products, as well as the largest importer. In 2007, U.S. exports of forest products grew to $28.1 billion, composed of $6.8 billion in wood and $21.3 billion in pulp and paper products. Exports accounted for approximately 10% of total sales.
U.S. imports of forest products have consistently grown at a faster rate than exports. In 2007, total U.S. forest product imports were estimated at $40.5 billion. The major demand centers for forest products continue to be North America, Western Europe, and Japan. The U.S. alone accounts for approximately one quarter of the world’s forest products production and nearly 30% of forest products consumption.
The American Wood Council (AWC) provides an organizational structure for wood products companies and associations to work together on building codes and standards, green building policy issues, and a focused set of environmental regulations. Working together, the industry can have the resources, clout, and credibility to achieve policies that can secure a strong future for the wood products industry.
