Organizational Overview
Material Handling Industry of America (MHIA) is an international non-profit trade association that has represented the material handling & logistics industry since 1945 - the industry that makes the supply chain work. Member companies come from all areas of material handling and various parts of the world, making MHIA a strong national and international representative for the material handling industry. MHIA’s mission is to create a greater understanding between business and Industry of the solutions offered through material handling & logistics.
Scope of Membership Activity
MHIA members are manufacturers of industrial material handling and logistics equipment, systems and software or user-specified components for such equipment. They market their products in the United States. Membership is also held by business publications, consultants and systems simulators. Members take part in MHIA's annual trade events, spring/fall meetings and in a variety of other programs and events throughout the year.
Scope of Services
MHIA members reach out to new markets and prospects by exhibiting in ProMat and NA (The Material Handling Show and Conference) trade events, an exclusive benefit of MHIA membership. MHIA members can join specialized product-specific sections and council groups to promote and influence specific solutions or technologies. Members build business relationships by attending Spring and Fall membership meetings and executive conferences. These meetings address commercial and business issues facing specific product groups and the industry as a whole. Member companies receive a complimentary listing and links on MHIA's site, MHIA.org, where members post news releases, white papers and cases studies on MHIA.org, plus have access to the My MHIA Members Only site. Members can grow their business globally through participation in selected international trade fairs. MHIA Members receive market trends and develop strategic plans through the MHEM Quarterly Analysis and Forecast and the MHEM Annual Rate of Change (ARoC) Workbook, offered at no cost to members. MHIA members also receive On The Mhove, a publication including news of interest to MHIA members while also addressing broader issues. MHIA Members who participate in MHIA trade events receive The Exhibitor, focusing on upcoming industry trade events. Members are allowed exclusive use of the MHIA Trade and Business Press database. MHIA maintains contact with many trade publications, business journals, newpapers, and freelance authors to communicate the importance of the material handling & logistics industry and MHIA programming.
Specific industry Information
MATERIAL HANDLING AND LOGISTICS is the movement, protection, storage and control of materials and products throughout the process of their manufacture and distribution, consumption and disposal. According to the U.S. Department of Commerce and Bureau of Labor Statistics, material handling and logistics is one of America's largest and fastest growing industries. The consumption of material handling and logistics equipment and systems in America exceeds $156 billion per year, and producers employ in excess of 700,000 workers.
Standards-related Information
Material Handling Industry (MHI) is an ANSI accredited standards developer and manages the activities of many national and international standards committees. MHI serves as the Secretariat for the US Technical Advisory Group (USTAG) for the ISO Technical Committees TC51, TC104 and TC122.
Currently MHIA has no formal activity in the conformity assessment arena.
