Organizational Overview
With more than 260,000 members in 170 countries, the Project Management Institute, Inc. (PMI) is the largest association dedicated to project management in the world. As the leading advocate for the profession, PMI is actively engaged in setting professional standards, providing a professional career path for project managers and maintaining a family of globally-transferable professional credentials: Certified Associate in Project Management (CAPM®), Project Management Professional (PMP®) and Program Management Professional (PgMPSM).
PMI® global standards and world-recognized credentials have helped establish the Institute as the premier authority in project management, helping it mature into the global organization it is today. In fact, the American National Standards Institute has recognized PMI as a Standards Development Organization.
Through the program, PMI works to develop standards for the profession that are valued by its members, the marketplace and other stakeholders. By doing this, PMI hopes to achieve worldwide excellence in the practice of project management through standards that are widely recognized and consistently applied.

PMI maintains and supports a very active research arm whose mission is to act as the catalyst for the expansion of the project management body of knowledge. Scope of Membership Activity
PMI membership is a win-win proposition for the profession and for the practitioner. PMI members are vital in advancing PMI’s advocacy mission and critical programs and projects such as creation and updating of global standards, accreditation of university project management programs, and development of pertinent credentials.
PMI membership helps project managers develop in their career by:
- Providing excellent networking and volunteering opportunities through PMI communities-- PMI currently has more than 250 chapters in more than 70 countries worldwide, including more than 25 in the Asia Pacific region;
- Supply profession defining research, such as the popular Salary Survery;
- Giving members access to knowledge through PMI.org, PMI publications and virtual industry or topic specific interest groups; and
- Making members visible in the job market through Career Headquarters.
PMI members also recieve excellent discounts on credentialing fees, books, Global Congress registration an electronic-searchable copy of the The Project Management Body of Knowledge (PMBOK® Guide) and access to all PMI standards through PMI.org.
Scope of Services
For the past 25 years, PMI has created standards and supported project management practices that are globally recognized. Through its credentialing programs and publications, which include the Project Management Professional (PMP) and A Guide to the Project Management Body of Knowledge (PMBOK® Guide), PMI identifies, defines, documents and champions good project management practices.
PMI currently has 11 standards and 9 official translations in print—making it the leading project management standard development organizations in the world. PMI is the only project management association developing standards for people, projects, programs, portfolios and organizations.
PMI standards are developed through a three-step review and approval process by teams of volunteers from around the globe. PMI standards help improve the understanding and competency of project management practitioners and executive leaders worldwide.
