Organizational Overview
The American Society of Agricultural and Biological Engineers is an educational and scientific organization dedicated to the advancement of engineering applicable to agricultural, food, and biological systems. Founded in 1907 and headquartered in St Joseph, Michigan, ASABE comprises 7,000 members in more than 100 countries.
Agricultural, Food and Biological Engineers develop efficient and environmentally sensitive methods of producing food, fiber, timber, and renewable energy sources for an ever-increasing world population. Members focus on continuous refinements in processing and machine design to support precision agriculture and autonomy.
Scope of Standards Developing Activity
For nearly 100 years, ASABE has served as the primary U.S. developer of standards, engineering practices and data (collectively referred to as standards) for engineering applicable to agricultural machinery and precision agriculture, water management, food, and biological systems focused on sustainability and circularity.
The scope of these documents encompasses, but is not limited to, the following subject areas:
- Agricultural equipment design including precision agriculture and autonomy
- Biological and biological systems engineering
- Natural resources management
- Irrigation and drainage
- Agricultural structures and optimum environments for livestock and crops
- Agricultural Waste Management
- Food, animal feed and bioprocess engineering
- Information and electrical technologies
- Forest engineering
- Renewable fuels, biocarbon and biomass
- Aquacultural engineering
- Nursery and greenhouse, and indoor growing operations and support
- Agricultural safety and rural health
