Organizational Overview

Founded in 1880 as the American Society of Mechanical Engineers, ASME is a not-for-profit professional organization that promotes the art, science and practice of mechanical and multidisciplinary engineering and allied sciences throughout the world. The core values of ASME are rooted in its mission to better enable mechanical engineering practitioners to contribute to the well-being of humanity. As part of its mission, ASME strives to be a world leader in mechanical and multidisciplinary engineering codes, standards, conformity assessment programs, and related products and services. ASME standards for boilers and pressure vessels, nuclear power components, piping systems, valves, elevators and cranes are a few of over 500 ASME technical standards recognized around the world for quality and market relevance.

Over 100 countries accept the ASME Boiler and Pressure Vessel Code as a means of meeting their government safety regulations. The quality systems of more than 5000 manufacturers of pressure equipment in more than 70 countries are certified by ASME.

ASME is committed to international cooperation, including encouraging participation by technical experts from around the world in its standards development process.

Scope of Standards Developing Activity

ASME develops the best, most applicable, codes and standards, and conformity assessment programs in the world. The first ASME standard was issued in 1884. Today, ASME maintains over 500 standards, 12 conformity assessment programs and administers over 40 U.S. TAG’s to ISO. The ASME standards development committee structure has grown to include 700 committees, including 50 consensus committees and 5 supervisory boards. There are over 3,900 volunteers (including more than 300 from outside North America) from industry (including equipment users and manufacturers), insurance, government, academia and other areas engaged in ASME standards development activities.

The ASME standards development consensus process includes openness, transparency, due process and balance of interest, and is consistent with principles of the WTO Technical Barriers to Trade Agreement. ASME codes and standards development committees meet regularly to consider revisions based on technological advances, new data, and changing environmental and industry needs. All meetings of codes and standards development committees are free and open to the general public.

ASME standards development is not funded by the government; standards development is supported by revenue from sales of codes and standards and related programs. Volunteer committee members are not compensated by ASME.
